The cath lab provides x-ray images of the heart's arteries. This allows the doctor to look at blockages of the arteries and the function of the areas of the heart. Using minimally invasive procedures, your doctor can diagnose and treat blockages in the coronary arteries or other heart-related conditions.
Your doctor may also be able to open a blockage using angioplasty, in which a tiny balloon is inserted and inflated, flattening the plaque narrowing the artery. They can also insert a stent, which is a small wire tube or use angioplasty to keep the artery open. The cardiac cath lab is available 24/7 for emergency procedures if needed.
