Tips for Senior Health

Get Physical

The experts say it best. Everything that gets worse as we get older, gets better with exercise. Being physically active is one of the best things you can do for yourself.  Even moderate exercise can help you stay strong and fit both physically and mentally.  Check with your doctor before starting, then make small efforts each day and build on your success.

Know Your Medications

Many seniors take multiple prescriptions  in addition to over-the-counter medications, vitamins and herbal supplements.  It’s important to keep an up-to-date list of all these items and include the dosage, prescribing doctor and pharmacist. Keep your list with you and update to doctor appointments and hospital visits.

Know Your Numbers

Knowing your blood pressure, cholesterol and blood sugar levels are kind of like keeping your eyes on the dashboard of your car.  They help give you a sense of how your systems are working and help you spot potential problems.  Talk to your doctor about having these tests done and make sure you understand what the numbers mean for you and your health.

Fall Prevention

Falls are a leading cause of injury to older people.  Evaluate your home for potential problems and address them before a fall occurs.  Remove throw rugs, boxes and clutter from pathways and stairs. Install grab bars in bathtubs or consider a shower chair.  Arrange closets and cupboards so that things are easy to reach and install a nightlight between your bedroom and bathroom.

Feeling Blue?

Life changes such as moving or retirement may cause stress and feelings of sadness. Many people may adjust to changes, but others may develop depression.  Talk with your doctor if you’re not feeling like yourself.
